Jeff, In regards to cleaning the valves; do you prefer to remove the patina as well as the junk on the valves? Or just the white crusty material. I've tried to convince my repairman to leave the dark patina but he insists on getting back to shiny bare brass. I feel that bare brass in the presence of water with dissolved carbon dioxide (the exhaled breath is a perfect example) is more prone to dezincification resulting in white powdery deposits and ultimately degradation of the valve surface. Whereas the dark patina provides some degree of protection. What do you prefer to do?

I use a variety of different sized mallets and center punches. I would say that the mallet I used on this video had a head that weighs approximately 6-8 oz. (120 - 225 gm) with a length of 9-10 inches (23-25 cm). For the center punch, I'm not sure on that particular instrument....I made these videos in 1987 or 88 and just don't remember. In the US, center punches can be bought in different sizes as most any hardware or home improvement store. Since different horns use different sized screws, the size of the punch should be selected so that it goes into any threaded whole without being so tight as to damage the threads. Most of my punches that I use I made from steel screw stock of various sizes.

You can use a lighter to heat the outer slide without worrying about the lacquer so long as you don't overheat the slide. Just warm, not hot! I get my mallets through one of several instrument supply companies. They are rawhide mallets that improve with use!

I imagine that once the penetrating oil doesn't work on my trumpet (which obviously isn't a tuba), do you think a lighter of some sort would work without removing the lacquer? I won't do it unless I hear from you. Also, Dr. Tuba, where do you get these soft mallets? What are they called? Thanks for posting this!

I remember Roger told me a story about this- he and his wife Jorjana had flown to Sapporo to conduct a tuba big band concert, Roger being one of the few living composers for Tuba, they were thoroughly exhausted after the long flight, then they transferred to bus with 47 tuba players who all insisted carrying their beloved instruments on board! it was mind frazzling and quite a spectacle. cliff in tokyo

Actually, the footage on the trailer of the video is stock footage and the bell being photographed is a school instrument from the university and not my own. The dents you see in the bell, were it my instrument, would be removed. I primarily am concerned with the actual workings of the instrument, but in the case of a cosmetic issue that is so easily remedied, I would make it look nicer!

As I watch this, I think that you are very helpful. At the end, the tuba bell playing the music moves, making it live-action, which leads me to assume it is yours. Do you not care about the physical appearance of your tuba at all?
